《法学经典著作选读》着眼于西方法律思想史上自古希腊至近代对法律思想发展具有重大影响的思想家的经典作品，以法学理论的基本问题为主线，选取具有思想性、为后世所推崇且为学术界反复征引的作品之片段，力图展现这些思想家具有代表性的法律思想。每章篇首附以作者和所选作品的简介，对于一些经典著作的译本，除了本书选取的译本外，还指出了相应的现代译本信息。所选文本一般具有内在的连续性，自成体系。根据所选内容的逻辑性和结构特征，或直接引用原文标题，或由编者拟定若于标题，以体现所选文本的层次性和重点，便于读者掌握其中的思想脉络。由于经典著作的特点，历史上各种版本和译本层出不穷，往往良莠不齐，故经典著作的选编，版本至关重要。本书所选版本皆为历史上的善本，译本也都是历史上久为称道的优秀译本，版本和译本都在每章篇尾指明具体出处，便于读者搜寻原文进一步阅读。本书附录选编部分中国古代具有深刻法律思想的名篇作为补充，一方面扩展法律思想的领域，体现中国特色；另一方面也起到对比参照的作用，可以启发读者立足国情，关注现实，深入思考，形成自己的法律思维。
